7:00pm
1. Call to Order at 7:01pm by Buddy Plumlee; Gail Cannata, Cindy Davies, Uwe Gsedl, Heidi Kuharich,
Adriana Sarellana, and City Liaison Rosemary Mackey in attendance. No quorum established.
--Buddy introduced new member Cindy Davies.
2. Approve Minutes of June 6, 2019: Moved to August meeting due to lack of quorum.
3. 2020 Art Banner Exhibit Call for Art: Rosemary reported in final design phase; expected to drop
- week of 7.15.19. She intends to use Rachel Weaver Rivera’s piece from HOME Exhibit at City
Museum.
4. The Butterfly Effect Update:

Commission members report countless anecdotal compliments on overall campaign.
Gary School Principal, Stephanie Drake, contacted Rosemary to inquire about weather
protection on butterflies, specifically if more would be needed prior to end of exhibit. Buddy
confirmed that additional treatments should not be necessary, but the wind might be a minor
factor.
Discussion on closing events (expected in October 2019) included allowing artists the right of
first refusal at $50 or donation to silent auction with proceeds going to CAC. Location right of
second refusal. Silent auction bids to start no lower than $50. All butterflies to be assessed for
damage at discretion of CAC, priced accordingly. Suggested silent auction timing to coincide with
Food Fest on 10.13.19.
Uwe designed a poster with all butterflies represented. It will be offered to all participating
artists as a pdf.
5. Update to Proposal for Butterfly Mural by Juan Chawuk:

Buddy reported on appearing at City Council to answer questions prior to vote. City Council
voted unanimously to proceed with mural.
Buddy confirmed that panels will be received and prepped during week of 7.15.19. Specs: four
4x8’ aluminum panels (=16x8’ work surface) to be beveled at edges and pre-drilled for hanging
with 1/8” thick masonry screws; Tampico to cover installation cost by Sign-a-Rama.
Waiting on signed contract between City and Tampico (in hands of City lawyer)
Juan is currently in the area working on another project but can begin on West Chicago piece as
soon as he (and prep work) are ready; expected to begin week of 7.22.19
Concerning proposed design, Rosemary asked how closely the mock-up would be adhered to as
the faces of the children appear to be realistic while the rest of the design appears more
whimsical

a. Uwe invited all to his photography opening reception with his brother Bodo Gsedl, Twins Work,
at Kindred Coffee Roasters on Friday 7.12.19, 6-8pm. Show runs through July.
b. Gail announced the 2019-20 Gallery Theatre program and will deliver list to Rosemary for press
release.
c. Rosemary announced that Lew Achenbach will hang selection of his work in main space of City
Hall.
d. Heidi announced that Mike Rizo, US Forest Service, contacted her with a funding source as part
of ongoing Monarch conservation efforts in West Chicago. Funding ($1,000) would come
through the Monarch Joint Venture and Next Era Energy and go toward a gardening project.
There are some guidelines/stipulations. Heidi will follow up to see if funding is restricted against
government entity acceptance and to ensure this is not the same project Judith Horsley has
been working on (in which case, we'll seek to collaborate).
e. Rosemary announced that America in Bloom judges are returning soon; info on City website.
