AGENDA ITEM TITLE: Alebrijes Community Art Project – Project Plan

AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY:
During the Special Meeting of the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) on March 10, 2022, an Agenda Item was approved
to proceed with organizing and managing two separate community engagement and enrichment project concepts: Community
Wreaths and a Community Alebrije Sculpture. Both projects correlate with the Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World at Cantigny
Park art installation that opens June 1, 2022. Preliminary planning for each project has yet to be executed.

In addition to the CAC’s projects, the City and various community partners have been working on the development of an overall
community collaboration project to celebrate the Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World installation in West Chicago. As part of this
collaboration, the group has created the West Chicago Alebrijes Project: Project Plan. The Project Plan outlines a complete
community collaboration project, and also provides an outline for each community partner’s contributing project and timeline.

In order to proceed with the development of the West Chicago Alebrijes Project: Project Plan, and to also include the CAC’s projects,
City staff provided a preliminary Project Plan for both CAC projects as they correlate with the West Chicago Alebrijes Project: Project
Plan Concept Summary.

Recommendation
Staff recommends presents the following options:

Option 1
As presented in the West Chicago Alebrijes Project: Project Plan, staff has provided a recommended Project Plan for the CAC projects
that provide project summaries and proposed timelines that correlate with the larger community collaboration. The CAC could
proceed with this presented timeline.

Option 2
An additional option is to host only two wreath making workshops, with one being at Blooming Fest on Saturday, May 21 and
another at Gallery 200 on an undetermined date. With regards to the West Chicago Alebrijes Sculpture, the CAC could maintain the
schedule presented in the West Chicago Alebrijes Project: Project Plan.

Staff recommends the CAC proceed with Option 2.

Option 2 does provide for a shorter timeline for the Community Wreath project, but also provides less commitment from members
to attend events. With regards to the West Chicago Alebrijes Sculpture, the presented details in the West Chicago Alebrijes Project:
Project Plan provide an adequate timeframe to solicit community feedback and also construct the structure with a beginning of the
project being during Railroad Days on July 11. Additional items, such as other community appearances, can be added as needed.

Additional details could be finalized during the April Special Meeting if needed.
