MEETING MINUTES
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
November 20, 2024, 7:00 P.M.
1. Call to Order Establish a Quorum
a. Dave Shah, Staff Liaison, called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.
b. Roll call found Chair Nazree Williams, Co-Chair Tom Cherrington, Commissioner
Bob Blaus, Commissioner Tyler Kesler, Commissioner Victoria Burris, and
Commissioner Allen Rodriguez present.
c. Aldermanic liaison present included Alderman Christopher Swiatek.
d. Staff liaison present included Assistant Director of Public Works, Dave Shah.
2. Approval of Minutes
a. Environmental Commission Meeting Minutes of October 16, 2024
i. Rodriguez made a motion, seconded by Blaus, to approve the Meeting
Minutes.
1. Voting Yea: Williams, Burris, Kesler, Cherrington

5. Review and Discuss the Commission Priority List
a. Current List
i. Sustainability Plan - Subcommittee Update
Discussion: Kesler provided an update on the ongoing subcommittee
discussion on the sustainability plan. The subcommittee took the results
of the community survey and compared it with the resources provided in
the Greenest Region Compact framework and strategy document. The
subcommittee will continue its research on resources related to air
quality, green space, urban forestry, waste management, biodiversity,
and wildlife. Kesler requested an update on the Groot contract from staff.
ii. Holiday Lights Recycling Event - November 29, 2024 to January 17,
2025
1. Location: City Hall, New Hope United Methodist Church, Murphy
Ace Hardware, Water Treatment Plant, Library, The ARC Center
2. Flyer (Enclosed)
Discussion: Shah provided an update on the ongoing event coordination.
Rodriguez confirmed the Jewel-Osco will be added to this year’s program.
The flyer will be updated and distributed accordingly.

a. Pumpkin Composting — 1.32 Tons
i. Church signage request
ii. Collection dumpster box liner
Discussion: The Commission supports the Church’s temporary signage request
for the Pumpkin Composting event to alert motorists for the FY 2025 event. The
commission prefers Groot not to include the collection dumpster box liner moving
forward as the plastic liner will directly go into the landfill.
b. Cool DuPage Partner

Discussion: The Commission was generally interested in the program; however;
wanted more information before moving forward with the program. Blaus to
coordinate with the County to see if the program can be presented to the
Environmental Commission at the January 2025 meeting.
c. Kane County’s Recycling Drop-Off
Discussion: Bob stated an opportunity for the Commission to collaborate with the
organization to potentially expand the Paper Shredding event.
d. Green Power Community — Municipal Aggregation Program Interest (Enclosed)
Discussion: The Commission was generally interested in the program and the
presentation from NIMIC at the January 16, 2025 meeting.
December 18, 2024 Environmental Commission Meeting Cancelled
Other Discussions:
i. Rodriguez preferred the City to be active on Tik-Tok as it can more
influence the Gen Z population of the City. Shah will follow up with the
City’s Communications team.
ii. Shah discussed as of the October 16, 2024, meeting, the Environmental
Commission has adopted Hawthorne Lane between Harvester Road and
Powis Road.
iii. Rodriguez preferred the Director of Public Works to provide highlights of
2024 in the Public Works Department and wanted to learn about the
upcoming events and projects in FY 2025 for the Public Works
Department.

7. Adjournment
a. At 8:03 P.M., Rodriguez made a motion to adjourn, and Burris seconded the
motion. The motion was unanimously approved by voice vote.
