PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING MAY AS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, mental health is essential to the overall health, well-being, and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities; and WHEREAS, mental health conditions affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic circumstances, and early access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services improves outcomes and strengthens communities; and WHEREAS, stigma surrounding mental illness continues to prevent many individuals from seeking help, support, and treatment, contributing to isolation, untreated illness, and unnecessary suffering; and WHEREAS, education, awareness, and open community conversations about mental health promote understanding, compassion, and acceptance while encouraging residents to seek assistance when needed; and WHEREAS, the residents of the City of West Chicago have demonstrated their commitment to community wellness through the establishment of a Winfield Township 708 Mental Health Board pursuant to the Illinois Community Mental Health Act; and WHEREAS, Winfield Township 708 Mental Health Board works to identify local mental health needs and will be granting public funds to qualified community agencies to expand access to counseling, crisis intervention, substance use services, developmental disability supports, and other essential behavioral health services for residents; and WHEREAS, these investments help ensure that residents have access to local, affordable, and culturally responsive mental health services, strengthening families, supporting youth and older adults, and improving community safety and resilience; and WHEREAS, Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity for residents, local organizations, schools, employers, and government agencies to work together to reduce stigma, promote mental wellness, and encourage individuals to seek help without fear or shame. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, I, Daniel Bovey, Mayor of the City of West Chicago, hereby proclaim the month of May is hereby proclaimed Mental Health Awareness Month in the City of West Chicago, and encourages all residents to increase awareness and understanding of mental health, support those experiencing mental health challenges, and actively work to eliminate stigma associated with mental illness. The City calls upon community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, faith communities, and residents to promote compassion, inclusion, and mental wellness throughout the month of May and throughout the year. Proclamation Building Safety Month — May 2026 Whereas our City of West Chicago is committed to recognizing that our growth and strength depends on the safety and essential role our homes, buildings and infrastructure play, both in everyday life and when disasters strike, and; Whereas our confidence in the resilience of these buildings that make up our community is achieved through the devotion of vigilant guardians––building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, plumbers and others in the construction industry––who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings, and; Whereas these guardians are dedicated members of the International Code Council, a nonprofit that brings together local, state, territorial, tribal and federal officials who are experts in the built environment to create and implement the highest-quality codes and standards to protect us in the buildings where we live, learn, work and play, and; Whereas these modern building codes and standards include safeguards to protect the public from hazards such as hurricanes, snowstorms, tornadoes, wildland fires, floods and earthquakes, and; Whereas Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council to remind the public about the critical role of our communities’ largely unknown protectors of public safety––our code officials––who assure us of safe, sustainable and affordable buildings that are essential to our prosperity, and; Whereas “Built to Last” the theme for Building Safety Month 2026, encourages us all to get involved and raise awareness about building safety on a personal, local and global scale, and; Whereas each year, in observance of Building Safety Month, people all over the world are asked to consider the commitment to improve building safety, resilience and economic investment at home and in the community, and to acknowledge the essential service provided to all of us by local, state, tribal, territorial, and federal building safety and fire prevention departments, in protecting lives and property. City of West Chicago Proclamation Economic Development Week May 4-8, 2026 WHEREAS, more than 100,000 economic development and related professionals worldwide are committed to creating, retaining, and expanding opportunities that foster long-term, equitable community growth; and WHEREAS, the City of West Chicago is advancing economic vitality through implementation of the 2026–2028 Economic Development Work Plan, including initiatives to support business retention and expansion, modernize business regulations, improve access to City services, and strengthen communication with the business community; and WHEREAS, the City is actively working to revitalize its downtown through coordination of the Downtown Revitalization Commission, advancement of the West Washington Street concept planning efforts, and development of programs and policies that encourage reinvestment, occupancy of vacant storefronts, and a more active and walkable commercial environment; and WHEREAS, the City supports economic activity by facilitating new development and redevelopment projects, coordinating with developers and property owners, leveraging tools such as Tax Increment Financing districts, and aligning projects with adopted plans including the Comprehensive Plan and Central-Main Street Redevelopment Plan; and WHEREAS, West Chicago fosters a supportive environment for businesses through efforts to streamline processes, enhance predictability in permitting and licensing, and explore updates to regulations that reflect modern business practices and emerging industries; and WHEREAS, the City promotes community vitality and economic activity through special events, cultural programming, and public art initiatives that attract visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen West Chicago’s identity as a destination; and WHEREAS, economic development in West Chicago is strengthened through partnerships among local businesses, manufacturers, restaurants, service providers, artists, property owners, developers, educational institutions, community organizations, and residents, all of whom contribute to a resilient and growing local economy; and WHEREAS, since 1926, the International Economic Development Council and its predecessor organizations have advanced the profession globally, marking 100 years of leadership dedicated to fostering growth, innovation, inclusion, sustainability, and resilience in communities of all sizes; NOW THEREFORE, together with the West Chicago City Council, I, Daniel Bovey, Mayor of the City of West Chicago do hereby recognize the week of May 4-8, 2026, as Economic Development Week in West Chicago and celebrate the partnerships, initiatives, and investments that support local businesses, attract new opportunities, and strengthen the community’s economic future.
