Specifically, the Commission expressed reservations about the proposed renovation of the east (Main Street) façade, which the Commission identified as the build- ing’s historic primary elevation; the size and style of the upper-level windows proposed on the west (Turner Court) elevation, which were larger than the existing openings and of a different character; and the door proposed at the lower level of the west elevation. The east (Main Street) façade has been substantially reworked. The previously proposed flush alumi- num storefront system, which would have removed the building’s existing entry and window configura- tion along the historic primary elevation, has been replaced with a more traditional storefront arrange- ment consisting of a central entry door, flanking display windows, and a transom band across the top. The now revised configuration is more consistent with the existing Vernacular Commercial character of the building and retains the storefront expression that the Commission identified as a contributing feature of the Turner Junction Historic District. The west (Turner Court) elevation has been revised in response to both Commission concerns. The three upper-level windows have been reduced in size with the new openings approximately 3′-6″ tall, compared with 5′-2″ in the prior submittal. The lower-level entry door has been modified so it is no longer a single door with a sidelite but instead a double door to reflect the existing style, as was de- sired by the Commission. The south elevation remains consistent with what was originally proposed with the exception of the eastern portion of the building, which no longer contemplates the secondary entry door. Instead, a window is proposed at this portion of the elevation. The central wall mosaic and its three pendant- mounted LED wall wash lamps remain, as are the three window openings (two upper, one lower) at the west end of this elevation. The chimney removal continues to be proposed. Staff notes that the desired changes by the Commission have been made on the plans.
