Department Overview

The Mission of the West Chicago Police Department is to Protect Life and Liberty, Provide
Quality Police Services, and Forge Community Partnerships with Integrity and Professionalism.

The police department has three divisions: the Office of the Chief of Police, the
Patrol Division, and the Investigations/Administrative Division.

The primary responsibility of the Office of the Chief of Police is to provide general management
direction and control for the Department.  The Office of the Chief of Police consists of the Chief
of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police, and the Management Analyst.

The Patrol Division consists of Uniformed Patrol Officers, a Community Service Officer, and a
Training Officer.

The Investigations/Administrative Division consists of Detectives, School Resource Officers,
Evidence/Property, the Targeted Response Unit, the Community Relations Officer, the
Administrative Sergeant, the Records Unit, and Social Services.

Personnel And Police Events
On July 21st, at the City Council Meeting, Officer Blake Bertany was recognized by the
Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) for his accomplishment of removing 300
intoxicated motorists from our roadways. Also recognized for their DUI enforcement efforts
were Officer Chapman and K-9 handler Officer Rigler.




On July 5th, West Chicago had a parade celebrating America’s 250th birthday.  The parade was
a huge hit for residents of the community.  Both old and young enjoyed the event. Lots of
candy was given out for the celebration.

On July 21st, West Chicago Police Department’s Social Service worker, Sophia Gonzalez, with
assistance from Records personnel, Cinai Beltran and Lizeth Romero, held Senior Resource
Night at the ARC Center.  This free event helped attendees learn about General Estate Planning,
Guardianship, and Medicaid planning.

Criminal Activities

Criminal Defacement:

There were zero (0) reports of graffiti in West Chicago in July of 2026.

Criminal Damage to Property:

Officers investigated two (2) cases of criminal damage to property.  A padlock was damaged,
along with a window.

Theft:

Officers investigated eleven (11) Thefts in the month of July. Three thefts occurred at Murphy’s
Ace Hardware, where tools were stolen.  This case is under investigation.  Menards and
Walgreens were also victims this month.



 Mental Health Cases:

The officers responded to fifteen (15) Mental Health calls for service for the month of July.
Calls ranged from individuals expressing suicidal tendencies to issues dealing with stress and
anxiety.  Several were transported to Central DuPage Hospital, voluntarily for treatment.




Burglary & Burglary to Motor Vehicle:

Zero (0) reports of Burglary or Burglary to Motor Vehicles for the month of July.




Driving under the Influence (DUI):

West Chicago Police Officers investigated and arrested thirteen (13) individuals for driving
while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  Officers continue to make the streets safer for
West Chicago residents.

Possession of Controlled Substance:


During the month of July, Officers investigated five (5) Possession of a Controlled Substance
cases.  Four of the cases were closed with arrests.  Two of the offenders were also arrested for
having outstanding warrants.



Unlawful Possession of Firearms:

Officers responded to a suspicious incident report and discovered a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0
9mm firearm located in the center console of the offender's vehicle.  The offender was charged
with two counts: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm- No FOID and Unlawful Possession of
Ammunition. Both Class A misdemeanors.

Officer Activities


On July 20 at 2040 hours, Officers responded to a report of two people fighting under the bridge.
Upon officers' arrival, they observed an individual standing over an unconscious, bloody victim.
Officers observed bloody hands on the subject standing over the victim.  The individual was
immediately handcuffed and detained. The victim later regained consciousness and stated that
two male blacks, one male Hispanic, and possibly a fourth individual approached him and started
hitting him.  A handgun was displayed, but the victim is unsure who had it.  The victim was
intoxicated and incoherent at the time and kept repeating himself. The medics were called to
examine the victim for injuries and transport him to Central DuPage Hospital.

There was a witness walking over the bridge at the time of the incident, who stated he observed
the offender, who was in custody, slapping the victim multiple times and kicking him in the head.

The offender was transported to the Police Station, where he was mirandized and interviewed.
The offender stated he was robbed and wanted revenge, after first claiming he was just trying to
help the victim up.  Officers checked the cameras, and at no time was the offender robbed while
he was sleeping in the Train Depot.

The victim was reinterviewed at CDH at the Assistant State’s Attorney’s request.  The victim
didn’t want to pursue charges because of his immigration status.  The ASA advised that they
would pursue felony charges against the offender, regardless of the circumstances, due to prior
incidents and arrests.

After further follow-up by officers and Detectives for the State's Attorney’s Office, charges of
Felony Aggravated Battery X2 (Great Bodily Harm & Public Way) were approved. The offender
was transported to DuPage County Jail.
