From railroad junction to city

1849

JunctionThe Galena & Chicago Union Railroad and its St. Charles connection formed the first railroad junction in Illinois.

1873

Village of TurnerThe growing railroad community incorporated as a village.

1896

West ChicagoThe community changed its name to help attract industry and identify its location.

1906

City of West ChicagoThe village reincorporated as a city.

A community shaped by many families

Railroads, industry, and migration drove West Chicago's growth. Immigrant workers — including many Mexican and Puerto Rican families — established lasting roots. Postwar growth, new public institutions, parks, and historical organizations helped shape today's community.
