Form of government

West Chicago uses the Mayor–City Council form. Seven wards each elect two alderpersons. The fourteen Council members serve overlapping four-year terms. The Mayor presides and votes to break a tie.

The Council adopts ordinances and resolutions, approves the annual budget, and enacts tax levies.
