City Declares April 2026 as Autism Acceptance Month
The City of West Chicago proclaimed April 2026 as Autism Acceptance Month in West Chicago during the City Council meeting on April 6, 2026, recognizing individuals with autism and promoting understanding, inclusion, and acceptance throughout the community.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, is a developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact, and experience the world around them. Autism is present in people of all racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and each individual has unique strengths, perspectives, and support needs.
The proclamation recognizes that individuals with autism contribute in meaningful ways to schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and community life, and affirms that communities are strengthened when opportunities exist for individuals of all abilities to fully participate and thrive.
Autism Acceptance Month provides an opportunity to foster awareness, acceptance, and inclusion while encouraging residents to help remove barriers and promote respect and understanding throughout the community.
Mayor Daniel Bovey issued the proclamation encouraging all residents to join in promoting understanding, inclusion, and acceptance of individuals with autism and their families.
