West Chicago Celebrates Arbor Day with Tree Planting and Continued Environmental Leadership

The City of West Chicago marked Arbor Day on April 24, 2026, with a ceremonial tree planting and a renewed commitment to strengthening the community’s urban forest.

Earlier this week, Mayor Daniel Bovey issued a proclamation recognizing Arbor Day and the many benefits trees provide, from improving air quality and reducing energy costs to enhancing property values and supporting local wildlife. The proclamation also encouraged residents to take part in protecting and expanding the community’s tree canopy.

To commemorate the day, City staff planted a tree at the West Chicago/Winfield Wastewater Treatment Plant. The planting reflects the City’s ongoing investment in sustainable infrastructure and environmental stewardship across all areas of the community.

West Chicago also proudly celebrates its designation as a Tree City USA community for the second consecutive year by the Arbor Day Foundation. This recognition highlights the City’s continued commitment to sound forestry practices and long-term environmental planning.

In addition to the City’s operational efforts, the West Chicago Environmental Commission plays an important role in shaping the community’s environmental future. The Commission advises and informs the Mayor and City Council on environmental conditions, regulations, and policy opportunities that protect and enhance quality of life in West Chicago. As part of its ongoing initiatives, the Environmental Commission will be giving away trees at Blooming Fest, helping extend the impact of Arbor Day beyond a single day of recognition.

Residents are encouraged to join in the spirit of Arbor Day by planting trees, caring for existing green spaces, and supporting local environmental initiatives. Through these collective efforts, West Chicago continues to grow a healthier, more resilient, and more vibrant community for generations to come.
