City Council Takes Next Step in Development of Community Park
Construction of the future Community Park will begin this spring following City Council approval of a contract award for Phase 0 development on March 16, 2026.
Through Resolution No. 26-R-0027, the City awarded a construction contract to E. Hoffman Inc., with a total contract amount not to exceed $1,127,296, for work on the northern portion of the future park site known as Phase 0.
Phase 0 improvements will include:
- A landscaped entry garden at Ann Street
- Accessible concrete walking trails
- Two picnic shelters with accessible tables and seating
- ADA-compliant benches and accessible picnic areas
- A Monarch Waystation for pollinators
- Interpretive signage about the site’s history and ecology
- Over 80,000 square feet of native prairie restoration
- Shade and ornamental tree plantings
- Solar bollard lighting
Funded in part by a $2 million federal grant secured by Congressman Sean Casten, Phase 0 represents the first construction stage of the Community Park Project, focusing on approximately five acres currently owned by the City. Environmental cleanup and property transfer activities will continue on the remaining land. This phase does not include future parking areas, which are planned for later stages of development.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2026, with completion expected by fall 2026.
Community Park Information Session
Residents are invited to attend an upcoming informational session hosted by the West Chicago Environmental Response Trust team. The session will take place on Wednesday, May 20, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 800 Weyrauch Street in West Chicago. Attendees may park along Weyrauch Street and enter the driveway at the end of Hazel Street.
The event will provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about ongoing monitoring and response efforts related to the former Kerr-McGee site. Additional event details will be shared as they become available.
