Big Boy Visit Draws Thousands to West Chicago
West Chicago welcomed thousands of visitors last week as Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 made a memorable stop in the community as part of its America’s 250th Anniversary Tour.
The historic steam locomotive was on public display in West Chicago on June 3, drawing rail enthusiasts, families, and visitors from near and far. According to Union Pacific Railroad, approximately 61,000 rail fans visited West Chicago during the display day alone, making it one of the largest community events in West Chicago.
To help accommodate visitors throughout Big Boy’s June 2-4 stay, the City coordinated 28 parking locations throughout the community and provided detailed parking information and maps. Complimentary shuttle service connected visitors to the event, with two shuttle routes operating on June 2 and June 4 and an expanded three-route shuttle system serving guests on the June 3 display day.
Visitors were encouraged to explore West Chicago beyond the rail display. A free trolley service circulated throughout downtown on June 3, connecting guests to parking locations, activity areas and points of interest across the city. Some trolley rides featured special guest tour guides who shared information about West Chicago’s history, landmarks, and community.
Guests were invited to discover local attractions, including the West Chicago City Museum, which offered walking tours and a special scavenger hunt. Many visitors also explored local businesses, enjoyed the City’s parks and public spaces, and dined at area restaurants throughout their visit.
In addition to the locomotive display, attendees enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities organized throughout the event area. Activities included a photo station, a game zone featuring inflatables and carnival games, children’s activities, and an artist corner with face painting, balloon art, and caricatures. Live entertainment was provided throughout the day by Kelli Ann and Ken of Who Knew, Katie Ragona, and Luis Alcantar, helping create a festive atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
As a special keepsake, commemorative Big Boy whistles were distributed to attendees throughout the event. Visitors also had the opportunity to purchase Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 commemorative T-shirts from the West Chicago Police Department to help raise money for the Special Olympics.
The City of West Chicago is honored to have been selected as a stop on Big Boy’s journey and grateful for the opportunity to share this historic experience with so many people. The excitement, enthusiasm, and community spirit displayed throughout the event helped create lasting memories for visitors of all ages while showcasing everything West Chicago has to offer.
The event was made possible through the collaboration and support of the Union Pacific Railroad, residents, businesses, community partners, visitors, volunteers, City staff, elected officials, and public safety personnel who helped ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
