Public Invited to Provide Feedback During Police Department Accreditation Review
The West Chicago Police Department is pleased to announce details of the on-site assessment for reaccreditation with ILEAP. The on-site assessment is scheduled for June 8th, 2026. During this time, a trained assessor from an Illinois peer agency will arrive to conduct inspections, file review and audits of the police department. This representative from the Illinois Chiefs of Police Association will be examining the department to ensure the West Chicago Police Department is qualified for the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP) professional status.
Accreditation is the ongoing process whereby agencies evaluate policy and procedure against established criteria, and have compliance with those criteria verified by an independent and authoritative body, the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Council. The criteria, or standards, are policy development guidelines that represent a level of quality service delivery. The true indicator of compliance, however, lies with an evaluation by trained, independent professional peers. The establishment of meaningful and professional standards and an evaluation for compliance to those standards are, therefore, the two fundamentals of an accreditation program. Tier Two has 181 standards.
The West Chicago Police department was first awarded this status in 2017. This assessment serves as a reaccreditation in the areas of Administration, Operations, Personnel and Training.
Chief Fleury and the accreditation team invite the public to voice their opinions, experiences and other information with the accreditation team. On June 8th from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, citizens may call 630-293-2222 to speak privately with the representative from ILEAP. The assessment team wants to hear your experience with the West Chicago Police department and whether the citizens feel the department should be accredited. When you call 630-293-2222, please tell them you would like to speak with the on-site assessor. They will transfer you to the assessor who will be working in a private area. Your opinions or concerns will be heard by the assessor and forwarded to the Chief of Police. Comments can also be emailed to: policerecords@westchicago.org.
About the West Chicago Police Department
The West Chicago Police Department is a municipal agency, currently staffed by 46 full-time sworn officers. There are no part-time or auxiliary officers. The department is divided into two functional divisions: Patrol and Support Services. The command staff consists of one Chief, one Deputy Chief, two commanders, four Patrol Sergeants, an administrative sergeant and one Detective Sergeant.
There are 21 officers assigned to patrol, working 12-hour shifts with shift picks every year. Two patrol officers are attending the academy and one is in the field training program. Six officers are assigned as detectives with two assigned to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Three School Resource Officers answer to the detective sergeant. The administrative sergeant supervises three Tactical Response Unit Officers.
